Stay Safe Girls

“The crowd is amazing. The way they cheer us, make us feel proud! I am sure in home nobody can beat us.” A famous cricketer said in a recent post-match presentation ceremony. I was happy to listen to him, but deep inside my thoughts a question pricked me – Can our girls say this? “The people in our home country are very amazing. The way they support us, make us feel safe and proud. We are sure that in home nobody can touch us.”

I asked my wife the same question. She smiled and quoted my Facebook status, “Life is actually simple, but the people around you make it tough to survive.” And she continued, “It is a sin to be born as a girl child in this world. In earlier days when a girl was in the womb, she was forced to miss the moment when she was supposed to enter the world. A decade back at the time of birth her relatives wrung her neck and thrown her into a trashcan. If by any chance if she gets an opportunity to breathe in this world then she misses all roses of life and was finally fitted to a graveyard because that is where she will get peace of mind. ‘Till that time she has to fight with her relatives, male friends (a small bunch of idiots), uncles (most of the men in late thirties) and oldies (walks and talks in a decent tone, still eying on you despite their age). No girls are safe in our home country because not everybody can be as sweet as my father and my hubby!” She went inside the kitchen to prepare dinner for us.

Only a girl know our Nation better. Having read a lot of articles on rape in the recent years – #SrilankanTamilianRape #HaryanaRape #DelhiGangRape #MumbaiGangRape I have no idea on what to tip my fellow Indians on safety…but a few worth sharing here…not just for my city girls, but for all of my home country.


Spray: Carry a pepper spray or chilli spray in your handbag, which will serve as a self-defence weapon. Though they are bit costly, still it is very effective when put to proper use.

Teach: Teach your sons and grandsons how to behave with girls so that our future generations will not face this problem. Do not hesitate to speak with them because it is better for them to learn from you.

Apps: Almost all of us use touch phones today, so why not to use it for better output? Whatsapp, Facebook, Skype and BBM are good apps to stay connected, but in an emergency, safety apps like Smart Suraksha is must. Speed Dials: If you do not have a touch or android phone, then use speed dials wisely. (Dad, Mom, Brother, Uncle, Close Friend, DCP or ACP phone numbers, Control Room)

Awareness: Be aware of your surroundings. When alone, you must know your whereabouts, if not use your Google maps. If you feel unsecured, get out of that place immediately.

Family and Friends: Let your family know your whereabouts, if not at least your close friends know where and whom you are visiting. Because nothing would be worse than to know, that your child or friend is unsafe in an unknown’s land.

Education: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Nelson Mandela” I second that. Government should provide free education to people of India rather than announcing free rice, gas, etc., for the sake of votes.


Girl: When a man cries, they say, “Be a man.” I say, “Be a girl. You are not a victim; you are the pride of our Nation!”

I: ‘I’ has a pride to stand on its own. That’s why ‘I’ is always written in CAPITAL. Have confident in you. A kick to his will put him down. (Tip: Do not become fat in your thirties itself. You need to stay healthy and fit to kick and run.)

Rights: We, as a Nation, never bothered to read and understand laws, because we think only lawyers should read the laws and advise on your rights. Know your rights. An act taken in self-defense often is not a crime at all; no punishment will be imposed.

Learn: History may be dry for some still we read it as a subject, then why not to have our Nation Laws as a subject?

Self-defence: Self-defence is an art. Learn it when you are young. If not a black belt, at least learn the basics to help yourself in the worst situation possible. I have seen elders saying that if a girl learns Karate, she might lose her grace and become tough. I am sure only fools accept this.

Tips are easy to write, and quite easy to type. And it feels good to be applauded by a few people, but only if these tips are followed, then it achieves its purpose.
